The Knight of MaisonRouge A Novel of Marie Antoinette Modern Library Classics Alexandre Dumas Julie Rose Lorenzo Carcaterra Books
I was delighted to discover that two Dumas books were recently discovered. The Knight of Maison Rouge was re-discovered and the other, The Last Cavalier an unpublished final work accidentally found by Dumas expert Lauren Yoder researching and gathering information on his mistresses. This complete novel was found among the papers that were given him.The Knight of Maison-Rouge was an enjoyable surprise to me. It was like discovering a lost painting by Leonardo. If you enjoy Dumas, then don't miss this gem.

The Knight of MaisonRouge A Novel of Marie Antoinette Modern Library Classics Alexandre Dumas Julie Rose Lorenzo Carcaterra Books Reviews
I've read most of Dumas' work before I undertook the reading of this translation. In my opinion, it is hideous. If you love the "period" feeling of the language of Dumas, do not read this version of his work. I was utterly disappointed, and felt I was not reading Dumas' work. The translater butchered the very essence of Dumas' style of writing. In all of the other works of Dumas, I could not put the book down. It took all my wits to finish this labored translation!
I was very excited to read a "lost" Dumas novel, since The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my absolute favorite books. However, I found it extremely difficult to force myself to finish this one. It's either a dull translation or simply not one of Dumas' best works. I suppose you would have to read the original French to know for sure. The heroic characters are one-dimensional, sappy cliches of the Romantic era. The "adventurous" scenes are over in seconds and not gripping at all. There is nothing in this story that was not better portrayed in A Tale of Two Cities. Basically, there's a reason why I was able to purchase this book used for $1...
Hard to follow the storyline although quite witty and clever but nonetheless sad.
This may be a very good book, but I had to stop reading it because the copious notes are not active in the version. The note numbers are there in the text but cannot be clicked. To read a note you have to go to the table of contents, select Notes, page through the notes from the beginning till you locate the specific chapter then continue to page through till you find the note, itself.
By the time you get back to where you were reading the spell of the narrative has long been broken and I, anyway, just didn't care anymore.
I should've been forewarned that this was a sloppily-produced edition when I read the following maladroit metaphor in the Introduction
"The Knight of the Maison-Rouge is one of those rare gifts that are all too seldom found in the book world. A work once thought lost in the dustbins of a shuttered store, with few if any editions in circulation, is rediscovered, lavished with a fresh coat of paint and polish, and brought out to the front of the shop for all to see and grasp."
Translator Julie Rose has indeed splattered this Dumas classic with paint, making it all but unreadable. Her translation is clumsy and uninspired until it hits dialogue, when it lurches into the annoyingly anachronistic. Apparently, Rose thinks Dumas was the Dashiell Hammett of his day. Here are a few of the 1930's-era detective novel Americanisms she puts in the mouths of his characters in one chapter alone
"Do you swear on your honor...cross your heart and hope to die?"
"This is the dizzy limit, madame!"
"...the thought gave his heart a pang and caused him suddenly to clam up."
"...you don't turn your back on her even though she's a working-class girl..."
"...show you to be a woman of distinction, the absolute opposite of your getup and this slum."
I didn't get past chapter two before bailing on this Modern Library edition. I give it two stars simply because its excellent notes and glossary give a thorough historical overview of the Revolutionary period in France and the main players. But if you love Dumas for the feeling of surrendering to French culture and history, you'll almost surely want to resist the embrace of this hackneyed effort.
