Octavia Darcy is a delightful character of strength and grace who returns from India as a recent widow and decides that with her new fortune she need not marry and subject herself to the control of another husband. I love the fact that she does not shy away from placing her own political "man" in Parliament to better service the interest of her tenants and her estate. No only does she attract the attention of a "George Wickham" look alike snake, but she also seems to be on the mind of a very influential Lord of the Realm.I like the friends she develops and her companion, however, I would have liked a little more "story" at the end. It seemed to end abruptly. We can use our own imaginations to develop where the story should go, but it would have been nice for the author to tie it up with a nice bow for us.
I do not shy away from novels that are based on characters other than those Jane developed in P&P. We know that the family grew and there were many stories to come from the Darcy clan. I suggest the readers start with the Darcy Daughters and move down the list to this novel, though is is not required. A lot of the characters in this story will be easier to trace back to our Darcy family in the earlier books.

This one is very good in the series, but I admit it's not my favorite of hers. the heroine is lovable, the hero deserves her, and there are different elements to this with a classic villain. But for some reason, I didn't like this heroine as much as I liked Camilla, Cassandra, or the heroine from darcy connection. Still, this was great.
A nice heroine, a pleasant read, not humorous, a couple of genuinely nasty characters. It would be unreasonable to expect the author to be a genius, which Jane Austen, of course, was. Plus, it's impossible for a 20th-century author to be able to have a 19th century consciousness, the world and the general consciousness having changed too much since then, especially in regard to woman's changed role in society, and religion and its place in daily life. One can only attempt to understand and reproduce it to a small degree. To some extent the author succeeds in doing this.
I really enjoyed reading this story about another Darcy family member that has been previously unknown. I also enjoyed how the connection was brought to Netherfield and other parts of Hertfordshire. I found myself cheering on the cause of Octavia Darcy, and feeling downcast when it looked as if her future was quite bleak. I only wish there would have been a bit more written about Octavia and Lord Rutherford, such as a bit more detail about their relationship. I highly recommend this book to Austen fans, as it can make you feel, just like Miss Austen does for her readers.
A good romp through the landscape brought to us in the prior books. Love how Herfortshire is woven in. The characters are what make the book great fun to read.
From page one to the climactic ending of The Second Mrs. Darcy, I felt as is I were on a train, gradually building steam, piecing stories and characters together while taking me on an amusing trip... until I realized I had but some 15 pages left-- and that I didn't want it to end with so much still unsettled. I found I was holding my breath with anticipation of how this story would work itself out! The end comes fast. A bit too quickly maybe for my liking, as I truly loved the heroes. (Possibly a epilogue could have made it a bit more satisfying... but then it really isn't necessary to anyone except for those of us that enjoy sugar in our champagne!) Ashton's excellent ability to tell a story and captivate her audience coupled with the name-dropping of some of our best beloved Pride and Prejudice characters throughout, make this an ideal read for any fan of Jane Austen "sequels." This is the best in her Mr. Darcy's Daughters series yet. I loved it!
I have read all of the "Darcy" novels, and this being the best so far. I think the farther away from Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam we get the more believable the characters are.I had a hard time in the earlier books accepting that Elizabeth Darcy would leave her daughters at such a critical time as thier coming out, to someone elses oversite esp. in respect to facing complete ruin due to her own sisters behavior at that age. I also would think that Elizabeth would have more insight into her own daughters temperments and would have been a better correspondent...suspending that, the earlier books were pleasant, but not nearly as good as the "Second Mrs Darcy". Even if you have not read any of the sequels, this book is completely enjoyable.
I was at first disappointed in this book to see that our beloved characters from 'Pride & Prejudice' were not part of the story. However, as I continued to read I was extremely pleased at the new story line and the new characters. I felt like it took too long to implement Lord Rutherford into the book, nearly 1/2 the book later.
Octavia Darcy was the wife of Fitzwilliam Darcy's long lost cousin. After his dicease, Octavia remained in India until called home to see about an inheritance from a never before known relative, leaving her very wealthy. Her 1/2 sisters and brother cannot stand her and never could.
Octavia is in the same mold as Elizabeth Bennet/Darcy, where personalities are concerned. She is witty, brave, and opposed to stuffy, think too highly of themselves, snobs.
She draws attention to herself when she takes charge of a library rescue operation that is in flames. by Lord Rutherford. It does not go well, but they are destined to meet time and time again, until finally they end up at the same place for an extened period of time.
There are new characters, fairly well untroduced with stories of their own. You will learn to like these people, and want to know more of them.
A cousin of Mrs. Darcy's late husband comes along and tries to claim her inheritance by fraud, but Lord Rutherford comes to the rescue.
This was a wonderful story! Clean! Well written. And I highly recommend it.
