The Duke of Olympia Meets His Match edition by Juliana Gray Romance eBooks

Truly grand. Interesting and so much fun! Olympia, a 74-year-old hero did indeed meet his match. Penelope, 50, was lovely, clever and regularly kept Olympia on his back foot. I loved their wit.

The blurb gives you the gist of the tale and I repeat myself by saying it gave me so much pleasure. I love intelligent characters and witty repartee and this had both in abundance.

Early in the morning as he was preparing to catch the train to London....."I am not, at my age, in the habit of making casual love to women. I am not nearly done with you. I have only just begun, as a matter of fact--"

"Oh, for God's sake," she said. "Just kiss me good-bye and put the rest in a letter, when you get the chance."

Exasperated, he kissed her twice and said, "Not nearly done," before closing the door.

You see? Back foot. Penelope was anything but awed by Olympia's magnificence.

As a rule, I'm not fond of novellas but I loved this little gem:) Btw, though the quotes I give here may suggest a story filled with sex, there was NO graphic sex. There was an intriguing mystery, entertaining conversation and witty banter. I loved it.

Enjoy your reading! :)

The Duke of Olympia Meets His Match edition by Juliana Gray Romance eBooks Reviews

Sailing on the SS Majestic from New York to Liverpool is the formidable Duke of Olympia, now 74. As usual he is on a "diplomatic matter" to find a mysterious portfolio; a foreign agent; and a disguised anarchist bent on destruction, all before the ship docks eight days hence. The matrons aboard are on a not-so-diplomatic mission, especially when First Class has the opportunity to cast out nets to snare the unmarried Duke. Mrs Stanley Morrison especially wants him for her beautiful Ruby (20), and the Duke's challenge on the voyage is to dodge those marriage traps. Ruby, however, has other ideas; she wants only Robert Langley, a salaried American who is traveling in Second Class.
Sailing also is Ruby's chaperone, Mrs. Penelope Schuyler. In her early fifties, a widowed distant cousin, Penelope has all the attributes of an educated lady and is lovely, charming, and clever. Travelers who come under suspicion are Miss Harriet Harris, companion to wheel-chair bound Mrs. Crawley; plus Robert Langley and Penelope Schuyler (is there anything hidden in her luggage?)
The Duke is very taken by Mrs. Schuyler and, as a disguised Elias Penhallow of Buffalo (for privacy) he spends many early hours on deck enjoying wide-ranging topics of conversation with her. Penelope, in turn, is very taken by the handsome, trim, youthful Duke.
The uneventful voyage is broken by a bad storm and the break-in of Penelope and Ruby's cabin. Where are the mysterious papers? Who are the evildoers?
Sail on to have a good time finding out if and how the Duke completes his mission, anarchist and all. And if he has definitely and happily met his match.
Satisfying novellas can be difficult to write, but Juliana Gray more than satisfies with this one. Perhaps it helped that most of the story occurs on shipboard during an Atlantic crossing. Perhaps it is because, like the heroine, I am a woman of a certain age; and ladies our age rarely find love in historical romance. Another plus is Ms. Gray's skill in using the English language. I haven't read her other books, but I'm fairly sure that she is a darn good writer. Here is one of my favorite passages

<quote>You see, until now, whenever I contemplated this change, I couldn’t quite conceive what I might do to replace this business, which has occupied the heart of my life since I was a young man. I no longer relished these escapades as I once did, but what else was there to relish? What else might fill its absence?”

The blood pounded in her cheeks. “Are you saying you wish to marry me because you relish me?”

He sighed and gazed at the ceiling. “You want more flowery words, I suppose. Women always do. It is not enough that a man feels as he does, with all the strength of his heart; he must then declare it in the most honey-soaked language, flowing on and on, rotting his very teeth as it wanders through his mouth—”

“No.” She scraped back her chair and flung herself into his arms. “Relish will do very well.” <end quote>

I'm officially hooked, so now I'm turning to the next installment, A Most Extraordinary Pursuit.
