A Man and His God Sacred Band of Stepsons Sacred Band Tales Book 1 eBook Janet Morris
As a fan of the Sacred Band of Stepsons, I was interested to see how this classic novella would increase my enjoyment of what is, to me, one of the best “hero” fantasy sagas I’ve read in a long, long time.I’m glad to say I wasn’t disappointed.
The tale revolves around Tempus, a lone mercenary leader struggling to deal with the curse of immortality amid a world in upheaval. Things need to change. They need direction. Strong leadership and guiding principles that will forge the bonds of unity into the far-reaching future. A difficult task, compounded by the fact that Tempus himself is looking for direction, for his own life is troubled by doubt, conflict, and a turbulent relationship with his god, Vashanka.
To the rescue comes the slaughter priest, Abarsis, who through a heroic act of self sacrifice, gives Tempus’ life focus, and sows the seeds for what will become the stuff of living legend.
Witness for yourself how a kiss of death gives birth to the Sacred Band of Stepsons, as we know and love them, and you’ll appreciate that little bit more, the dark heart that carries the burden of eternity on his shoulders.
The stage is set...
“Life, and everlasting glory to you.”

A Man and His God Sacred Band of Stepsons Sacred Band Tales Book 1 eBook Janet Morris Reviews
This mythological tale isn't something I would normally go for but it was recommended to me so I decided to try it out. It was definitely a different read for me. It's very well written and I think for someone into the sacred band series it's a must read.
It's been a while since I read this story, and I'd forgotten the impact that it has. Janet Morris is a powerful writer, and this story shows her style beautifully.
It hits you like a sledgehammer. Or a short sword being swung by Tempus.
Read it. It's incredible.
If you didn't know better, you might think you were reading a tale from an old scroll or clay tablet. An epic story filled with those things that have endured through the centuries, battle, love and the lust of gods for mankind's essence. A starting point for the tale to unroll, a beginning that points to an end.
The Man and His God is a novella based on Plato's Sacred Squadron, which consisted of pairs of male lovers that formed the elite force of the Theban army in the 4th century BC. It is more than a sword-and-sorcery tale. Before us is a story where mythology is reinvented in the most delicious, vivid detail, in a fantasy world that is larger than life, and perhaps more true to our dreams and our yearning for a heroic journey. In this world, reality is but a distant, pale shadow of what is possible, and what the author, Janet morris is fleshing out before us.
I find it truly amazing that she found a lyrical way to describe the exploits of this elite cavalry unit. The Sacred Band of Stepsons is loyal to its members and its commander. It begins when Abarsis, the Slaughter Priest from the North, brings his Sacred Band to Tempus, a warrior who cannot die, nor can he enjoy his immortality. At the beginning of the story this lone mercenary is perceived by others as 'Death Himself'.
By the end of the story, the wounded Abrasis takes his last breath in Tempus' arms. The scene features one of the most delicate descriptions of helping a dying man find a measure of comfort amidst the pain. As he breathes out his soul, Tempus seals his last moment with a symbolic signature of a kiss. Indeed, the kiss of Death... This scene, and indeed the entire concept of the Sacred Band, bring to mind customs such as homosexuality in the militaries of ancient Greece.
Five stars.
Janet Morris with her masterful writing and keen knowledge of the time period, sets the tone for this amazing fantasy. She has evidently done a lot of research and she breathes life into the mythology. The emotion is so evident, especially when Abrasis dies in Tempus’ arms, and Tempus bestows a kiss on him. It’s really an incredible read.
“Where Tempus goes, the storm god scatters his blessing.”
And thus begins this saga of a rigid, overly confident man who, having known no ill fortune his entire life, has begun to question and reject the very god who has forever shielded him. Going in, I have to admit this ancient time frame is not my usual era of interest; however, because I was immediately struck by the author’s eloquent, authentic prose coupled with the book’s richness, I was drawn in. It takes place in a town called Sanctuary, where mercenaries have gathered for the onslaught of war. Vivid descriptions abound, showing us filthy living conditions, weaponry, wizards, and how even back in antiquated times, business owners hoarded drugs. Also included are areas such as rivalry, slavery, and the ill treatment of eunuchs that fill page after page with such detail, you feel as if you’re there on the same voyage; a powerful journey, where, in the end, Tempus finally opens up his heart. Excellent reading for true historical fiction fans.
