This is a direct sequel to The Notorious Widow by the same author. I believe this is the better book between the two. The romance was much better and more central and the villains were more integral to the actual plot. The central romance served as the pivotal plot point around which all the subplots were woven. The subplot involving Gray 's reputation and attempted murder as well as the subplot involving Laura were masterfully intertwined with the central romance. My only issue with the book was the gross distortion of Catherine and Blake's characters. In this book Catherine is almost an inept guardian and Blake is an absent one. Neither of the character traits were evident in the previous book. Catherine practically raised her younger siblings and while true she was not familiar with London, she is savvy enough to have either figured it out or found some other knowledgeable female to mentor them through the season. And Blake would certainly not have allowed Catherine to shepherd Laura by herself. He also would have forced a maid on Mary since he champions the down-trodden and would have known better. If this book had been a standalone it would have been perfect. But since it is a sequel it gets 5 stars for the story but it doesn't go on my favourite list for not being true to the returning characters.Tags : The Rake and the Wallflower [Allison Lane] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. This story has it all - romance, scandal and crime. It meshes the whole thing perfectly. At least I could not find anything that did not fit and besides it is well written. Perfect.
This book was a true pleasure to read! As some of the reviewers wrote, the hero and heroine are not your typical regency characters, but that's what I liked. They were not superficial and their qualities made them appear real.
The book flowed easily from one scene to the next and never lost my interest.
The only drawback I found was in the intimate scenes. They were a little too steamy for my taste.
My applause to the author for a well written book.
I loved this book. I loved the hero and the heroine, and despised the villains and the annoying sister. This is the first book I've read by this author, and I definitely want to read more! I think she is superb at drawing up characters.
This was my first book by Allison Lane and I found it very enjoyable. Although it is the second instalment in a trilogy, I feel it can be read as a stand-alone story.
The main characters Gray and Mary are very likeable, though a little different to the usual leads found in Regency stories, which made a nice change. The author has also included a lot of period detail.
Overall, a nice read.
A truly lovely story, the main couple were amazing, there was plenty of sweetness and adventure. The one star is taken off for the unbelievability of the Laura character - however badly delusional she was, I just cannot buy it that something like that could happen - if a person talked like she did, they would be in Bedlam...
I was fairly engaged with this story. Lasted through all the chapters. Usually got the plots figured out by the third chap. But liked the characters enough to see them through to the end.
I read this book a few years ago in the days before I began doing reviews. I remembered that I enjoyed it and decided to reread it. It's a good book with interesting characters. The H is a rake with a shocking reputation, whilst the h is a quiet, plain bluestocking type and they begin an unlikely friendship. There is a villain and there is the same dreadful sister from the previous book, the Notorious Widow. In this book she was a bit over the top and probably cost the book a star but it was still well worth reading. It's a clean, traditional romance.
